Cubismi: Addressing Diagnostic Errors with a Decision Intelligence Solution

We face a diagnostic error crisis negatively affecting patient care outcomes that has been evolving over the last 20 years due to pervasive legacy health-tech combined with exploding big data (~10-fold increase in image volumes). Diagnostic error rates are estimated at 15-20% and misdiagnosis rates, such as for cancer, appear to be increasing. Today, radiologists are forced to sift through exploding datasets held within separate legacy data silos to facilitate diagnostic and care decisions aimed at optimizing outcomes for each patient. Medical imaging today represents a staggering 90% of the digital footprint, which are viewed on legacy PACS with legacy viewers. Today, radiologists are estimated to read an image every 3-4 seconds. The time required for radiologists to safely extract key data needed for each decision has increased exponentially, requiring multi-tasking across multiple legacy viewers. They simultaneously face increasing pressures to accelerate their workflows and increase the number of cases they read each day, measured as RVU’s. Surveys from the American College of Radiology (ACR) demonstrate a greater than 93% failure rate of AI automation in the real world. Far from elevating patient care outcomes, these efforts produced limited workflow improvements, and mostly produced erratic decisions that could have caused patient dangers, if not for the intervention of human experts.
